Street scene from the picturesque town of Byblos (Arabic: جبيل) in North Lebanon.

The origins of Byblos (or Jubayl or Jbeil) can be traced back to the ancient Canaanite city of Gubal during the Bronze Age. During the Iron Age, the Phoenicians took over and named the city Gebal. The name Byblos is Greek.

The words papyrus and Bible are derived from the name Byblos.
