Buoy in the Center of Emden

Large navigational buoy in the center of Emden.

Just for the record, the nautical term buoy means navigational mark and the origins of the word can be traced back to the Middle Dutch boyen which literally means to tie down or bind. Buoy is most commonly pronounced just like the English word boy but in American English the pronunciation is closer to boo-ee.

Deutsche Bucht

The tomato red Deutsche Bucht Feuerschiff is one of the tourist attractions in Emden. The Deutsche Bucht is a retired lightvessel or lightship (Feuerschiff in German). A lightship is a ship which is used as a lighthouse in waters that are too deep or unsuitable for lighthouse construction for some other reason. For better visibility, lightships are usually painted bright red and the name of the station is displayed in white upper case letters.

Seagulls

Emden is an important seaport on the Ems River in the northwest of Germany. No seaport town would be complete without seagulls. Seagulls might be annoying at times but they are part of the landscape and definitely make a lovely picture.
