Bright Yellow Building in Varna, Bulgaria

Most of the buildings in the center of Varna date back to the first half of the 20th century. This one has been beautifully reconstructed with a facade painted in bright yellow and blue. The building houses a bank and various offices.

Varna under Reconstruction

The city center of Varna may look like one big excavation site but it is finally getting a much needed 'facelift'. A large section of Varna's main shopping street is currently closed for the public and all the old tiles are being replaced. I guess, work will be finished within a few months. The red building in the distance houses the Varna theater, opera and philharmonic orchestra. The building was constructed in the 1930s and is considered one of the most beautiful theater buildings in Bulgaria.

Braunschweiger Löwe or Brunswick Lion

The Brunswick Lion (in German: Braunschweiger Löwe) is the best-known landmark and symbol of the city of Brunswick (Braunschweig). A copy of the Brunswick Lion stands in Burgplatz square and the original is kept in Burg Dankwarderode (Dankwarderode Castle). The giant lion figure (it weighs almost 900 kg) was cast during the reign of Henry the Lion, Duke of Bavaria and Saxony. The Brunswick Lion is the oldest large sculpture from the Middle Ages, found north of the Alps. It is also the earliest example of hollow casting of a large figure since antiquity.

Kohlmarkt Braunschweig

A busy day in the Kohlmarkt of Braunschweig. The Kohlmarkt is a popular square in the inner city of Braunschweig. By the way, the name Kohlmarkt refers to coal and not cabbage as coal used to be stored and traded in the market. Braunschweig also gets translated to Brunswick in English.
