Cellini Saliera

The Cellini Saliera is one of the many precious objects in Kunstkammer Wien (Art Room Vienna) of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.

The Cellini Saliera is a gold table sculture created by the Italian goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini.

Saliera is the Italian word for salt cellar. It was made in 1543 for king Francis I of France who was a generous patron of the arts. The Saliera was given as a gift by Charles IX of France to Archduke Ferdinand II of Tyrol.

The Cellini Saliera was part of the Habsburg art collection at Castle Ambras but it was moved to the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna in the 19th century.

Damsterdiep is a waterway in the north of the Netherlands. It is 27 km long and connects the city of Groningen with Delfzijl. The waterway eventually flows into the Eems river.

The Humble Beginnings of C&A

Nowadays C&A is a major clothing and footwear retailer operating hundreds of stores across Europe, Mexico, Brazil and China. However, it all started in the small town of Sneek in Friesland, a province in the north of the Netherlands.

In the early 19th century, the two German brothers Clemens and August Brenninkmeijer traveled each year to Friesland to sell textile and linen to the local farmers. In 1841, they established their first business in Sneek and called it C&A Brenninkmeijer. The company logo has changed since then but still contains the initials of the two brothers Clemens and August.

A beautiful day in Hannover, Germany. With a population of more than half a million, Hannover is the largest city and the capital of the German state of Niedersachsen (Lower Saxony). The city skyline is dominated by the tower of the Marktkirche (Market Church). The Marktkirche is a huge Lutheran church which is located at the heart of the Old Town.
